It is with great pleasure and appreciation that the Section of International Law recognizes George Kounoupis as Section liaison to the Greek Bar Association, who has served as the Section's Liaison to the Greek Bar Association for several years. In conjunction with his involvement in the leadership of the US Lawyers Abroad Committee, George was instrumental in planning a successful conference with the Greek Bar Association in Athens in June, 2015 that the Section proudly co-sponsored. The conference was well attended and included attendance of distinguished guests such as Paulette Brown, then ABA President-Elect, Marcelo Bombau, then the Section's Chair, and the Hon. Myron Steele, former Delaware Supreme Court Chief Justice. Several Greek Supreme Court Justices, the Greek Justice Minister and the President of Greece also participated. Overall, the conference provided critical comparative law insights and was heralded as a positive step in promoting the rule of law in Greece.
Born in Sparta, Greece, Mr. Kounoupis studied International Relations and Economics at Lehigh University. He earned his J.D. from Temple Law School where he was involved in its Athens Summer Program. As a result, he became the first US lawyer to take the Greek Bar examination and is licensed to practice law both in the US and in Greece. Since 1989, Mr. Kounoupis has been advising clients on matters involving US and Greek law, and maintains offices in both countries.
